We already knew that we’d be far away from home for our first wedding anniversary. We also knew we wanted this day to be special for us, which meant discovering a nice area where we could spend some relaxing time together. Mendoza, Argentina turned out to offer just the respite we needed from our quick-paced adventures in South America!
We debated flying across the world to the French countryside, but that would have meant cutting our time in South America even shorter, something we definitely did not want to do. Luckily, we met some friends on our Galápagos Islands boat cruise who suggested Mendoza, Argentina. Being one of the world’s premiere wine producing regions, known especially for its incredible Malbecs, we immediately knew Mendoza would be the perfect spot for our anniversary.
Where We Stayed
We rented a room on Air BnB that was walking distance from the center of the small town of Chacras de Coria. It was a cozy room featuring a king-size bed, loveseat, bar area with a minifridge, and a tiny bathroom. It rested in a spacious yard with a pool (though not open when we visited in May, as that’s going into South America’s winter) that gave the place a very private, secluded feel.
As a nice touch and surprise, we also received a tasty breakfast tray each morning with juice, tea, coffee, and delicious pastries.
What To Do in Mendoza
Our primary activities in the Mendoza-area consisted of wine tasting and eating delicious foods. What can we say? These were two of our top priorities for our anniversary festivities!
Lunch at Casa de Campo
We visited this restaurant before checking out a wine museum down the street. The food and atmosphere were fabulous! I’ll let the pictures do the talking for us. Also, good wines!
Mueso de Vino and Wine Tasting at San Felipe
After lunch we moseyed over to San Felipe to explore the wine muesum and enjoy a wine tasting. Seeing the various historic instruments and methods for producing wine, along with the big barrel storage rooms, was quite interesting. But, let’s be honest: the wine led us here!
Lunch, Tour, and Wine Tasting at Clos de Chacras
Let me start this by saying that Clos de Chacras produces some excellent Malbecs. Seriously, this is high quality wine and by far our favorite wine we’ve tried during our trip. Put it this way: after trying Clos’s Malbecs and later a different (less expensive) brand, we could taste the quality difference. This has never happened to us before, but if we’re ever back in Mendoza or come across their wine somewhere, we know what we’re having.
At Clos, if you sit down for lunch (highly recommend – very good food!), you also receive a compelementary tour and wine tasting. Lunch is a three-course affair and if you love wine as much as we do, it’s worth it.
Wine Tasting at Pulmary
We kicked off our actual anniversary day with a visit to Pulmary to try some of their wines. It’s a small winery, but what really made the experience for us was chatting with the owner’s son while sipping some wine straight from the barrels.
After our wine tasting, we walked up the road to a restaurant called El Mercadito for our anniversary dinner. I enjoyed a shrimp pasta dish and Ben had a nice steak. (In case you hadn’t caught on, Argentina is known for its steak.)
Our Anniversary in Mendoza
Happy first wedding anniversary to us! We had a very nice time in the Mendoza-area and, since we spent our anniversary exploring this wine region, it will remain a special place for us. We’d love to go again (future anniversary trip, perhaps?) during the spring or summer months, when the weather is a tad warmer and we are both more inclined to pursue ourdoorsey activities like biking.
Overall, if you love wine, Mendoza should be one of your next destinations!
